Net Zero Heroes is a new pilot project from South Dartmoor Community Energy to help families take climate action and reduce their own carbon footprints.
We met so many people who wanted to do something to reduce their carbon footprint but weren't sure where to start. We wanted to develop a project to help normalise climate conversations and encourage people that we're all on this journey together.
We've wanted to work with schools and families for a long time and were delighted when the three funders came back with positive responses. So we're providing free in-school workshops and activities, followed by a community roadshow event which will look different in each area based on what's already going on in that parish. For example in a small school we'll just do a little pop-up roadshow straight after the in-school workshops, and in the bigger towns of Ivybridge and South Brent we've excited to be part of the town Climate Fairs. So we're really trying to make sure we support and encourage teh local action that's bubbling up everywhere.
The project has also received attention from parish councils looking to work on their climate emergency declarations because it provides a way of reaching the community and helping them to take action.
The project is funded by National Lottery Community Fund, and two local community energy funds which is really exciting. It means that a local renewable energy project that is owned by local people (they invested in it) is earning money by selling electricity and the profits are then put back into other community projects:
